10. Verb ser


As we saw in the last lesson, "ser" is generaly used for permanent statements or situations of verb to be. Look at theese examples and try to find what they have in common:

  • Juan es de Oviedo / John is from Oviedo

  • La mesa es de madera / The table is made form wood

  • Esta es mi madre / This is my mother

  • Yo soy español / I am spanish

Did you find the solution? I hope yes!, all of this statements are permanent. This means that John will always be from Oviedo, that table will always be from wood, for sure my mother will be always my mother and I will be spanish forever.

Let's see when to use the verb "ser":

Un coche es un vehiculo de cuatro ruedas
A car is a four-wheeled vehicle
El perro es un animal
The dog is an animal

Origins and nationalities:

*Note: Just to express the origin (ser) not the position (estar)

  • Soy de Sevilla (I am from Sevilla) Origin

  • Estoy en Sevilla (I am in Sevilla) Position

La paella es de Valencia
Paella is from Valencia
Ellos son españoles
They are spanish

I am an ingineer

She is a doctor


Verb "Ser"
Es una silla de madera
It is a wooden chair

The bike is made of aluminium

Dates, hours, time expressions:

Verb "Ser"
¿Qué hora es?. Son las diez de la mañana.
What time is it?. It is ten at the morning.
Hoy es jueves, mañana es cinco de mayo.
Today is thursday, tomorrow is may 5 th.
Es de día. Es de noche. Es tarde. Es pronto
It is day / night / late / early

To assign qualities:

*Note: For permanent ones(ser), and for temporal ones (estar)

  • Él es muy alegre - (He is always a cheerful person)

  • Él está muy alegre - (Now he is cheerful, but may be he is not always)

Verb "Ser"
Roberto es alto pero sus hermanos son bajos.
Robert is tall but his brothers are short.
El profesor es muy amistoso.
The teacher is very friendly.
